When I was in college, and knocked up with the first kid, I lived in an off-campus dorm next door to Banzai. I craved sushi daily, and lucky for me, the lunch special with two rolls and a tea was under five bucks. I literally ate there every day. No really, I did, and the ladies knew my order and when I was coming in. This was twelve or thirteen years ago, and I still remember the cute little smiling faces that greeted me each day.
Banzai moved to N. Lamar and seemed to go downhill. The mood, ambiance, decor, even the food changed. I would say it is now "okay," but more like "HEB sushi okay." But much pricier. It's an easy, quick lunch spot, but I kind of walk away feeling cheated. Many people will question "vegan sushi," but it can be really nice, refreshing, and healthy. No, I don't eat slabs of salmon, but I can appreciate crispy vegetables, well done rice, and non-soggy seaweed.
This is another place Happy Meal hates. He says Banzai has thin cuts of shitty fish, and small servings for the price. His big hangup is the lackluster waitstaff, who all seem a quart low on blood. I have to agree. It seems as though no one gives a shit here.
